Man arrested for setting Kanilai Game Reserve alight

Wednesday, March 18, 2009
One Landing Jatta is reported to have been arrested by the police for setting fire on the Kanilai Forest Game Reserve. The reserve belongs to the Gambian leader, Professor Alhaji Dr Yahya Jammeh.

According to information monitored on GRTS, Jatta, 30, is believed to be a professional wood cutter. He is said to have set the forest alight after finding enough wood. His intention, sources are reported to have informed GRTS, "was to come back to find some bush game, knowing for sure that fire and smoke force bush game out of their hiding places, making them easy to catch."

The GRTS report further said that police information also revealed that Landing Jatta confessed to having committed the act. The sources added that the 30 year old suspect also admitted to the police that he had also paid part in previous outbreaks of bush fires in the area in past years.
