Massive floods affect 7 areas in KM

The disaster management coordinator of the Kanifing Municipality has disclosed that currently seven areas in the KM were affected during the past one week torrential rains.


Binta Sey-Jadama made this revelation on Wednesday during an interview with the Daily Observer at the Kanifing Municipal Council. She revealed that currently the areas affected so far are; Ebo Town, New Jeshwang, Bundung Borehole, London Corner, Bakau Farokono, Tallinding and Dippa Kunda. She disclosed that they started recording the floodings on the 18th of August and discovered that two lives, a boy and a girl, got lost by the floods.


Madam Sey-Jadama went on narrate that on August 25ththey recorded a similar down pour, in which so many families within Bakau were rendered homeless because their houses were inundated. She averred that so far the assessment is going on but that cannot tell the actual figure as at now, as there are teams in the field doing the assessments, noting that every day they have new information coming in. She however disclosed that as of now they have 94 families and a total of 1441 affected persons within the Municipality, from August 18th to date.


“We are in the mid of August the water is no more flooding couple with the underground water that is coming on. So now we are expecting to have more reports especially on inundated households because most of the people living within the swamp they experiencing dampness in their households whilst the water is coming underground so couple with storm water,” she remarked.


She revealed that KM is habitual by mid of August they would start assessing, recording disasters and so on. Adding that at this time around they are experiencing very strong windstorm, which leads to many households losing their roofs and structural collapse were also registered in Tallinding.
