Mayor Colley rubbishes Imam Leigh’s comments

The National mobiliser of the ruling Alliance for Patriotic Re-orientation and Construction (APRC) and mayor of KMC, Thursday rubbished recent comments made by Imam Baba Leigh of Kanifing Estate Mosque, in which the latter during his last Friday Sermon described the recent executions of the nine death row inmatesas “un-Islamic”.
Colley described Imam Leigh as being among the type of people trying to “instil
uncertainty” within the populace. He also stressed that the Gambian people are more
appreciative of President Jammeh today than ever before. “Let them
[detractors] know that Gambians have now understood very well who they are. Now
is the time for us to know the true colours of who is who. I am using this
opportunity to tell him [Imam Leigh] that if he believes in himself, I think
the proper way is to go to the Gambia Supreme Islamic Council and talk to them
as a Muslim leader,” he said, while urging him to note that everybody knows
that no one in this world comes to stay forever and if he quotes about an Imam
who dies 20 years ago in Serrekunda, “I am telling him that is not a reminder.
We have seen people who lived and died more than those years.”
He continued: “The course of what is happening is showing
everybody’s true colour towards the country and what he [Imam Leigh] is saying
about the country’s economy and diplomatic relations does not exist, not
economically neither politically. Nothing of his comment is absolutely
happening. I am very disappointed that words of that type are coming from a
“respectable” religious leader like Baba Leigh.”
He put it to Imam Leigh that Gambians know that it is not whoever talks against APRC is an opposition, but whoever has a hidden agenda also, no matter how long it takes, will surface one day because occasions like this when people are supposed to give strength to their country, that is the time you know who is who. “And that is the time we know who the patriots are. We are not saying all supporters are patriots but occasions of this nature easily spell out who they are,” he added.
