Meles scores historic goal

Africa » Gambia
Monday, September 07, 2009
Buba Jallow alias Meles of Samger scored a historic goal for the Gambia national U-17 team on Saturday, September 5th at the Independence Stadium in Bakau.

Meles, who was the leading goal scorer in the just concluded Pepsi Academy Tounament in Nigeria by scoring six goals in five matches, also scored Gambia's lone goal in 22 seconds into the first half of the game making it the fastest goal for The Gambia in international encounters. But the striker's early goal was not enough to earn The Gambia the victory against their visitors. The Gambia being the 2009 African champions and Nigeria hosting the FIFA world youth championship in October 2009, took the game as part of their preparations ahead of the under-17 championship in Nigeria.

The Gambian side created so many scoring chances through play makers, Buba Jallow and Abdou Njie, but could not capitalise on them. At resumption into the second half, Laure Kayodoe of the Nigerian side came with an equalising goal in the 66th minutes of the game after capitalising on a deflection, making his side more aggressive and giving the Nigerian fans more zeal to chant and support their players. Omoh Ajabu, Jude White and Terry Enaoh all nearly registered their names on the score sheet, but could not capitalise on their chances making the game end in a one-all draw.

Gambian coach, Tariq Shaggy told Observer Sports after the game that all his players were fasting which he said was the reason why the players were tired in the second half. Nigerian Coach John Obuh also siad that he was impressed with his players adding that the result was not what they expected for he and his boys had wanted to win the game. "But even if I had lost the game, it would have helped me learn more from the mistakes" Obuh Said.Meanwhile the second encounter of the two-day friendly will be played today at the Brikama Box Bar Mini Stadium at 4:00pm.
