Mo Hawk heads to ScotlandTuesday, September 08, 2009
After two recent successful international gigs in Finland and Norway, Gambian rap star, Mo Hawk, is heading to Scotland for another gig that is tipped to be well attended.
Rap and reggae music lovers in the Scottish capital of Glasgow are expected to converge at Club 30, on10th September to see the Gambian star alongside reggae musician Ras Askia. Pa Sanyang, a Brikama-born music promoter and the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Bandiyaa, a registered organisation, is the main man behind the event. In a short interview with What's On he said: "I feel honoured to introduce a Gambian musician to the Scottish crowd. Mo Hawk is a great musician and I like what he is doing. It is my plan to bring more Gambian musicians to Glasgow." Mo Hawk, who is sometimes fondly referred to as the "Rap Khalifa" is undoubtedly true to the rap game. His music is a powerful and passionate blend of styles and ideas that shows his commitment to his cherished profession. A leading vocalist of The Gambia's popular and internationally recognised rap group, Da Fugitivz, Mo Hawk started his solo career a couple of years ago. He owns a studio called the Da Block and this offers him the opportunity to meet and jam with some of the most talented, diverse and inspiring musicians in Europe. Unlike many Gambian rappers, the Rap Khalifa raps mainly in Wollof, his native language. He is trying his best to bring "Wollof rap" into the big scene. "It's really difficult to do it in a place like Europe but I am still pushing ahead. It's all about being original and fully representing The Gambia, my native land," disclosed Mo Hawk. The Gambian rapper, who is currently busy crafting more songs, is very much excited about his UK trip. "It's always a pleasure for me to entertain Gambians and rap music devotees," he said. He has performed in the UK in the past years with Da Fugitivz and, according to him, all those performances were off the hook. Organiser Pa Sanyang, who was born in the compound that used to host the popular Brikama night club called Safari, is optimistic about the gig. For Gambians living in Glasgow and its surrounding, the event is taking place on 26 Cambridge Street. Author: Sheriff Janko
