Modou Jaiteh… A rising Gambian - German star

Africa » Gambia
Thursday, August 26, 2010

The name Modou Jaiteh may not be popular within Gambian football circles however this name is beginning to ring bells in Germany football.

Born to Salieu and Ramou Jaiteh on 12th April, 1994, in Bakau, the Germany-based starlet is living no stone unturned in his bid to represent his country of birth in the near future. The number 23 teenager of RSC Essen (German Regionalliga) started his career, playing academic football at the Bakau Gilkock Academy before leaving for the European country at the age of 9.

While in Germany, standardised soccer facilities would help Modou to become an instant hit playing as a forward player for SG – Welper (the Dutch junior side that accommodates kids within age brackets of 11 and 13). The young Gambian was the toast of fans at SG – Welper as he netted as many goals in his two-year stint with the cadet side before earning a promotion to a much higher level at Sportfreunde 07.

Currently at RSC Essen, the school-going rising talent appears to be pleased with his level of progress in the Dutch football pyramid, as he also refused to hide his determination and burning desire to star for his motherland. In an interview with Observer Sports, Modou currently on two-week holiday in the Gambia, explained that his rapid adaptation to Dutch football came with the help of standardised training facilities coupled with the moral backing of his parents whom he lives with in the Germany city of Essen.

Observer Sports sought to find out the 16-year-old’s reaction in case Germany come calling. But he was firm:  "No! I won’t. I want to play in top league in the near future starting with the Bundalisga first, but when it comes to international football, I would love to play for Gambia my motherland.

"There is nothing in football like playing for ones country of birth. A lot of prides even if winning bonuses are not given," he said. Modou recognises that his football career is quite young and still has a long way to go. "I am still young and I will continue to work hard to make it into a top club in the next few seasons and from there I can move onto the next stage. I dream of playing in one of the top teams in the World," he said. The confident teenager is a player with silky and elusive skills. His height and strength are major factors with aerial dominance being one of his major qualities.
