Mother, daughter in court for alleged infanticide

Africa » Gambia
Monday, September 06, 2010
Two suspects, Ancha Mbaye and Jabo Njie were on Friday, 3rd September 2010 arraigned before Justice Lamin Jobarteh of the High Court in Banjul on two counts of murder and concealment of birth, contrary to Section 187 and 207 of the Criminal Code Cap 10, Vol III, laws of The Gambia.

The two are alleged to have concealed the birth of a new born baby, delivered of by Ancha Mbaye, by throwing it into a pit-latrine, with knowledge that death would be the probable consequence of such act, on the 18th of December 2009 at Galleh Manda village in the Central River Region. When the case came up last Friday, 3rd of September 2010, senior state counsel, Abdourahman Maitaima Yusuf informed the court that the prosecution was ready to proceed with the hearing.

The court was then reliably informed that the two had not secured the services of a legal counsel and the presiding judge, Justice Lamin Jobarteh ordered that the state provides a legal counsel to represent the accused persons and the case was adjourned to the 27th of September 2010 for hearing.
