Mother in court for concealing birth

One Sirah Gomez, on Tuesday, 18th August, 2009 appeared before Senior Magistrate Abdoulie Mbake of Kanifing Magistrates Court, charged with concealing the birth of a child, an offence that violates section 207 of the criminal laws of The Gambia.

When the case was called, the presiding Magistrate Mbake immediately ordered it to be transferred to the High Court's  Special Criminal Division. Magistrate Mbake ordered for the accused to be remanded till the case reach the High Court.

Sirah Gomez, in the month of August 2009, in Bakau New Town, was said to have delivered a child, secretly took it to a dumping site, thereby concealed the birth and caused death.
