Movie makers, others meet VPWednesday, September 30, 2009 The vice president and minister of Women's Affairs, Aja Dr Isatou Njie-Saidy, yesterday received in audience movie makers, the new managing director of Ecobank and members of the Gambia Cricket Association, at her office at State House. Shortly after their audience with the vice president, Desmond Elliot, a Nollywood star currently in the country for movie production, speaking to journalists, on behalf of his group, thanked the vice president for giving them audience despite short notice and said they were at State House to inform the VP about their activities in The Gambia. He expressed satisfaction with what he has seen in the country knowing very well the leadership role the Gambian leader is playing in the call for African integration. The Nollywood star said their aims amongst others are to build the capacity of the Gambian movie industry, its actors, and that piracy among other issues topped their discussion with the vice president. Elliot also spoke about the Gambia government's support to allow them use the infrastructures. This he noted would also portray the good image of the country. "We are very happy and proud of President Jammeh and the Gambian people. We want to make sure that we open up The Gambian movie industry in the sense that when you are in other parts of the continent you could see what is happening in The Gambia," he explained. The movie star however made emphasis on piracy, in the presence of which he noted, the industry cannot do well. According to him, the VP had also spoke on the need for a lucrative market. Elliot used the opportunity to reiterate his appreciation of the Gambian leader for his foresight in the unification of the African continent. Ecobank officialsEsijolone Okorodudu-Izegbu, the new managing director of Ecobank, who was also at State House to share with the vice president of his bank's vision for Africa, as a pan-African institution. She said they started operation in the Ecowas countries before extending their services to the north, east and central African countries. The Ecobank boss added that they had also made sure that the bank has actively participated in the Ecowas countries. According to her, Ecobank, is a bank that finances mostly the telecom industry in Africa. "We really appreciate the good advice of the vice president and the Gambia government for creating the enabling environment," she said. New plans According to the Ecobank boss, they have so many plans for their businesses especially in The Gambia including developing small micro enterprises, which she said, they have already started meeting to help them build their capacity. Okorodudu-Izegbu further expressed the bank's intention to partner with the NGOs in the country, women traders within the continent, which according to her was a concern raised by the vice president. "We are really taking the banking to the next level in The Gambia by setting pace for other banks here," she stated. New products According to her, the bank has introduced good number of services that had guaranteed traders not to carry with them huge sums of cash, especially in case of emergencies. The Cricket Association For his part, Jonny Gomez, president of the Gambia Cricket Association, told journalists that they went to the VP's office to say thank you to President Jammeh for his support to the association. He said the team would be travelling and they need support from people like President Jammeh who has always been supporting them recalling the several interventions by the Gambian leader in bailing them out in most of their games they had participated. Gomez finally said that their main focus now is to develop the grassroots games. Alex Dacosta, the interim chairman of the National Sports Council, said they are also encouraging the participation of Gambians in the game.
