Murder convicts to be hanged

Africa » Gambia
Thursday, October 15, 2009
The director of Public Prosecution, Richard N. Change, has confirmed that all those who have been sentenced to death for murder and have lost their appeal up to the Supreme Court level will be actually executed by hanging.

DPP Change made this remarks on Tuesday during an interview with the Daily Observer at his office in Banjul. According to him, he was going to inspect the gallows in the State Central Prisons to make sure that the facilities are functioning well for the purpose of execution in support of the President Sheikh Professor Alhaji Dr Yahya AJJ Jammeh's concern about the alarming rate of murder cases in The Gambia. He said he is not trying to frighten anybody, but expressed concern and dismay at the rate at  which murder is being committed in the country.

He warned that those who take dangerous weapons like knife, screwdrivers etc and stab people to death should think twice, because  they too must be put to death. "If anybody kills a person intentionally, he or she must be put to death," he said. DDP Change further stressed that all those who have been convicted and sentenced to death and have lost their appeal up to the Supreme Court will be put to death by hanging unless the death roll convict gets presidential amnesty.
