Musa Joof's libel case fails to proceed

Africa » Gambia
Thursday, September 02, 2010
The criminal trial of Musa Joof failed to proceed before Justice Emmanuel Amadi of the High Court in Banjul after the prosecution was unable to produce witnesses before the said court.

The accused, Musa Joof, is charged with giving false information to a public officer and libel, contrary to Section 114 and 178 of the Criminal Code Cap 10 Laws of The Gambia. At the last adjourned date, the prosecution led by S H Barkun opened its case when it called the first prosecution witness, Musa Ndow who testified and told the court how he obtained the cautionary statement of the accused sometime in 2007 in connection with an alleged offence of giving false information to a public officer and libel.

The case was then adjourned to the 31st of August 2010, for the prosecution to call more witness. But on the said date, when the matter came up, principal state counsel Barkun informed the court that the prosecution was still unable to get to the other witnesses in the case.

S H Barkun however assured the court that he would liaise with the other witnesses before the next adjourned date. The case was then adjourned to the 18th of October 2010 for continuation.
