Tuesday, October 13, 2009
As celebrations marking World Breastfeeding Day, the National Nutrition Agency (NaNA), on Monday, visited the Serrekunda Health Centre, as part of their week-long awareness campaign on the importance of breastfeeding.

The theme of this year's celebration is "Breastfeeding in emergency".Malang Janneh, NaNA's Nutritional Field officer, Western Region, said the celebration of the World Breastfeeding Day is celebrated every year globally and The Gambia is no exception. He disclosed that targets for the awareness campaign is meant to reduce the mortality rate in emergency situations. He noted that should emergency occur food will be available for six months.According to him, they have mounted the campaign for the active protection and support for breastfeeding before or after emergency.

Janneh used the occasion to call on mothers and those who advocate breastfeeding as well as the community and professionals, to take active roles in the campaign for breastfeeding before or during emergency."We also want to mobilize and promote networking and collaboration between those with breastfeeding management skills and those involved in emergency response," he remarked.

He also revealed that emergency can cause extreme starvation on a child and that will immediately put  health and population at risk. In conclusion, he thanked UNICEF and the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare for their participation in the breastfeeding week celebration.
