NaYAFS sensitises people of WR on EPAsMonday, March 01, 2010 National Youth Association for Food Security (NaYAFS) in collaboration with the National Alliance for Food Security, on Wednesday held a caravan campaign procession with public addresses to sensitise the people of the Western Region communities about the effects of possible EPAs on their lives and livelihood.
The caravan started from the governor's office all the way to the Box Bar Mini-Stadium in Brikama with many school children, youth organisations and some members of the Brikama community participating. Speaking at the occasion, the governor of Western Region, Lamin Sanneh, noted that the least developed countries are seen to be re-organised and fragmented into blocks based on the regions, and that the African Union (AU) can deduce that the European Union (EU) is out to divide and rule us so that they can achieve their objectives on the EPAs. "There is the need to clear the reasons for what the EPAs are out for," he pointed out. The governor disclosed that the government of His Excellency Sheikh Professor Alhaji Dr. Yahya AJJ Jammeh in the drive to transform the country into an agricultural and economic state has been fighting hunger in-line with the objectives of Vision 2020 and of course the MDGs. Sanneh finally challenged the youths to establish youth farms where they will grow food crops and forget about going to Europe. Buba Khan, representing the ActionAid country director, spoke at length on many other problems faced by the African continent. "Communities need to be sensitised for them to know the impacts of EPAs before it is agreed, by the authorities," he pointed out. Khan also said that the policy needs to be put before the authorities to be able to protect the farmers in the country. Dede-Esi Amanor-Wilo, the ActionAid International Director for West and Central Africa, youth activists such as Oumie Sisokho, Alhagie Kebbeh, director of NaYAFS and Lamin Gassama of NaYAFS Western Region, all spoke at the gathering.
