NBR farmers predict good harvestThursday, September 02, 2010 Farmers in the North Bank Region (NBR) have predicted a harvest in the region this year. Farmers who spoke to the Daily Observer said that the intensification of their farming activities is in response to the Gambian leader's call for people to go back to the land to grow what they eat. Ousman Njie, a farmer from Numo Kunda in Sabach Sanjal District, said their crops are doing well that there is high hope that this year's farming season will be successful. "I have grown various crops such as groundnut and maize and I think people are taking heed to the president"s back-to-the-land call, which is meant to ensure that we eat what we grow," he noted. This he observed, will go a long way in reducing the importation of foreign food. A youth group called Jigimarr Youth Association also cultivated a big maize farm. Mballa MS Ndow, the president of the association and Musa Jeng, finance secretary, expressed hope that this year's farming season will be successful as people are responding massively to President Jammeh's back-to-the-land-call. Modou Gam, a member of the association said: "My family and I have cultivated rice, groundnut, and maize among others and when these crops are harvested, they will really help us, considering the huge amount of money we have spent on bags of rice and food stuffs."
