New Jeshwang embarks on cleaning exercise

Africa » Gambia
Tuesday, July 05, 2011
Residents of New Jeshwang last Sunday embarked on a massive cleaning exercise in their environment.

During the exercise, the participants cleaned the gutters in order to allow easy movement of rain water and to prevent mosquitos from setting breeding space. Speaking to the Daily Observer, Aji Isatou Sarr, senior Yaye Kompin in New Jeshwang, said that the exercise was meant to prepare them for any disaster that may occur during the rainy season and also to prevent malaria.

She commended the volunteers for their participation in the exercise, while advising residents of New Jeshwang to always keep their environment clean to avoid the spread of diseases. For his part, Abdou Balajo, a resident of New Jeshwang expressed delight at the turnout of the people of the area, while describing the exercise as a successful initiative.

He thanked the management of the Kanifing Municipal Council for their support. “If such an initiative can be done every two weeks, it will be of great help to us,” he concluded.
