New malaria project launched

Africa » Gambia
Monday, July 27, 2009
In a bid to tackle malaria in the Gambia, a new project for malaria prevention and treatment has been launched in the coastal village of Madina Salaam in Western Region.

It was initiated by a UK-based NGO called Wonder Years Centre of Excellence (WYCE), operating in Madina Salaam. Speaking at the launching ceremony in Madina Salaam on July 20 2009, Sainabou Faal, the assistant governor of Western Region thanked the organisation for coming up with such an initiative. She said the government of The Gambia has three priorities areas: Health, Education and Agriculture.  She thanked the donors whom she described as "true friends of humanity".

Ebrima K Sarr, the national director of Wonder Years of Excellence (WYCE) stated that his organisation will continue to provide the equipment needed in the fight against malaria in the village. According to Kumba Sabally, a representative from the Regional Health Management Team, if every village has this kind of project, the task of the medical personnel would be reduced. The malaria project coordinator of WYCE, Edrisa Touray, said that the project is a three-year programme and will include a series of sensitization programmes within the community.

For his part, Lamin Bojang, the vice chairman of the Brikama Area Council urged the community to take malaria victims to health centres on time.
