Nianija people weed President Jammeh's farms

Africa » Gambia
Monday, August 23, 2010
Over 300 people from Nianija District in the Central River Region (CRR) recently participated in a weeding exercise on President Jammeh's coos and rice farms in the district.

Addressing the volunteers shortly after the exercise, Alhaji Ganyie Touray, the governor of CRR applauded them for responding positively to President Jammeh's boack-to-the-land call, and pointed out that farming is the only way forward to attain food self-sufficiency.

He then urged the youths to venture into farming and show commitment and hard work. Hon. Yaya Whan, the National Assembly member for Nianija also commended the people for coming out to help in weeding the president’s farms, describing it as a manifestation of the love and loyalty they have for the Gambian leader.

Alasan David Cham, the chief of the district commended his people for their efforts. He spoke at length on President Jammeh's efforts in modernising agriculture and also improving Nerica Rice seed availability which has greatly enabled farmers to have easy access to the seeds.
