Tuesday, December 16, 2008
Chindirin David Awu, a Nigerian national was on December 5th arrested and subsequently detained at the Banjul Police Station, for attempting to commit felony, contrary to Section 365 of the Criminal Code, Cap 10 Volume 3, Laws of The Gambia 1990, Daily Observer can reveal.

Suprintendent Ma Lamin Ceesay, Officer commanding major crime unit  said the Nigerian national (Chindirin David Awu) was contracted by a Gambian based in the United States of America (name withheld) to kidnap his fellow Gambian who is also based in the USA.

"The Nigerian man was given a photo of the man (Gambian) whom he was assigned to kidnap. The Nigerian man traced the Gambian based in the USA (the complainant) who is currently on holidays in The Gambia, somewhere in Bakau at the hotel (namewithheld)", Supt Ceesay revealed.

According to him, the Gambian who contracted the Nigerian man to kidnap his fellow Gambian, promised to pay the Nigerian US$2,000 if he accomplished his task. He then added that the contractor was also in The Gambia but is currently at large."

The complainant told the police that while he was in the USA, some Gambians came to his house, dragged him out and beat him up and that, he thought they were the same people who followed him to The Gambia", Supt Ceesay revealed.

Meanwhile the police investigations are still in progress while the Nigerian man is still in police custody.
