Africa » Gambia
Wednesday, April 11, 2012
A five-member delegation from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) of the Federal Republic of Nigeria led by its director general will be visiting The Gambia from 18th-20th April, 2012 as guests of the Office of the Vice President and the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA), the Daily Observer has gathered.

According to the information, NEMA intends to provide technical assistance and other support to The Gambia through the NDMA to boost its operational and tactical efficiency and effectiveness in guiding and coordinating Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) activities in the country.

During the three-day visit, the delegation is expected to visit the NDMA office along Kairaba Avenue, the Nigerian High Commission in The Gambia, the United Nations Development Programme, Hydromet at the airport, NDMA stores, and the Daily Observer Newspaper to discuss on areas of disaster risk reduction advocacy, among others.

The delegation is also expected to visit hotspots in Banjul City and Kanifing Municipal Councils respectively where they will meet the two mayors, as well as the chairperson and members of the National Disaster Management Governing Council before a meeting at the Joint Operation Centre with the chief of Defence Staff of the Gambia Armed Forces.

It would be recalled that the NDMA under the aegis of the Office of the Vice President visited the Federal Republic of Nigeria from 1st to 4th March 2011 through an invitation from NEMA for a study tour.

The purpose of the visit to Nigeria was to request technical assistance support, learn examples of best practice and warehousing, among others. The visit, accordingly, was a dynamic one to strengthen disaster risk reduction in The Gambia within the spirit of South-South cooperation in the realisation of the implementation of the Hyogo Framework of Action, the Africa Regional Strategy on Disaster Risk Reduction and its Plan of Action 2006 to 2015, as well as the Ecowas policy on Disaster Risk Reduction.
