Nollywood actress to shoot movies in Gambia

Africa » Gambia
Friday, July 13, 2012

A renowned Nollywood actress -Rita Tony-Edochie, last week arrived in the country for what promises to be a movie electrifying project. The Enugu-based actress, who has featured in a number internationally-acclaimed movies, is planning to shoot three movies in the country that will be 85% Gambian dominated.

The actress, since her arrival has organized two-day auditioning at Alliance Franco Gambienne along Kairaba Avenue, in a bid to tap the country’s hidden talents. She spoke of her intension to return back in the first week of next month, for the actual realisation of the whole projects stressing that the story of the upcoming projects, depicts a young who left the country at the age of seven and returns some 50 years later.

The Nollywood star, who is synonymous with motherly roles and mother-in-law in most of her movies, added: “I choose The Gambia because the story is on Gambia and this my fourth time in The Gambia. The upcoming project will be 85% Gambian dominated as I want to leave a legacy in the Gambia. We did the auditioning free of charge last week, which was well attended. We want to bring up the hidden talents in the country.”

One major fascinating thing she observed in the country is the vast potentials especially among the teeming young people while pledging her commitment to tap these hidden talents. Rita then suggested that is high time for the country to have its own movie association that could go with the name ‘Gamwood’ as in countries in the sub-region, that will be an umbrella body of all actors and actresses in the country.

“I want to thank the president of the Gambia, for his foresight in holding his country at best. We are not happy what is currently happening in my country. No one is dying anyhow here, but over there in my country people are dying,” she added.
