Nursery school pupil drowns in gutter

Africa » Gambia
Thursday, August 19, 2010
[endif] [endif][endif] Wednesday's downpour within the Greater Banjul Area claimed the life of a Nursery School pupil.

Kadijatou Jallow, a 6-year-old student of Jahovey Nursery School, located within St Therese Lower Basic School in Serrekunda, was said to have drowned around Marouns Supermarket at Westfield, and her body later discovered around the Sankung Sillah& Sons Manufacturing Company Road inthe Kanifing Industrial Area.

A teacher from the school who pleaded anonymity told the Daily Observer that the unfortunate incident happened while the victim was on her way home from study classes with three friends. "They were trying to jump over the gutters and cross over to the road. Two of her friends successfully jumped over but Kadijatou Jallow tried to jump over but unfortunately, dropped in the gutter. She shouted for help but it was too late as the water was pouring heavily into the gutter and quickly took her along," the teacher explained.

According to the teacher, Kadijatou Jallow was one of the pupils in Nursery Three who are to proceed to Grade One next term. She said the girl had never gone home on her own after classes until the day of the incident. "All the teachers here can attest to the fact that the pupil never went home after school without her parents picking her.She always waits for her parents to come for her safely but today, it is just unfortunate," the teacher said.

Daily Observer learnt that when the incident happened, traffic police officers were alerted, and they in turn, informed the Fire and Rescue Services who came to rescue the young girl but did not find her in the gutter. She was later found around Sankung Sillah &Sons Manufacturing Company Roadand rushed to the Royal Victoria Teaching Hospital (RVTH).
