NYSS orients 10th batch![]() Thursday, October 15, 2009 The National Youth Service Scheme (NYSS), on Wednesday 14th October held its orientation programme for the 10th batch at the NYSS camp in Bakau. The NYSS board of directors through the Ministry of Youth and Sports secured funding from Gamjobs to support over200 youths with marketable skills. The funding include the maintenance of the NYSS youth camp to the tune of D207.600 support to youth skills training, 1.2 million dalasis and D7,200 being funding for 50 youth entrepreneurs (ex corps members) an entrepreneurship and small business management training as a prerequisite for support start up capital. Speaking at the occasion, Babou Jobe, the camp director of NYSS, said this year, they oriented 153 male corps, 47 female corps and the total of 200 corp members who were oriented this year. He revealed that the orientation programme is the period when new members are being put through a regulated camp environment, endurance drills and physical exercise. Jobe said that it is also at this time that skills and good practice are taught. He disclosed that they would also receive introductory lectures such as: 'alk on NYSS', which is to internalise the ideals of institute, entrepreneurship training, peer health education, sexual reproductive health counselling and guidance, among others. Also speaking at the ceremony, the executive director of NYSS, Musa Mbye, said that the mobilisation and recruitment prospective of corps, the renovation of the NYSS youth camp was done by the NYSS ex-corps members, who were supported with start-up loans or capital to start their businesses as contained in the terms and conditions of the funding by Gamjobs as a means of enhancing their skills. He further noted that the NYSS would this year conduct a national stakeholders consultative programme so as to ensure that the NYSS stay responsive to the training and employment needs of its corps members.
