Omar Koroma's Norwich future hangs in the balance

Friday, December 19, 2008
Gambia international teenager, Omar Koroma, could be on his way out of the English Championship side, Norwich City, Observer Sports can reveal. Norwich manager, Glenn Roeder, faces decisions on several loan players including the 19-year-old former Banjul Hawks striker who is still nursing an angle injury on the sideline.

"OJ (Koroma) has not really pulled up any trees and we will decide in the next few weeks whether we will retain him for the second half of the season," manager Roeder said of a player who joined Norwich City on a one-year loan deal from Preamier League side Portsmouth.

Koroma made his Norwich debut on August 9, 2008, as a substitute in a 2-0 defeat at Coventry City. The striker went ahead to feature in handful of key league matches before being hit by an angle injury that has barely reduced him to surplus to requirements. Koroma impressed Watford in October 2007, but was unable to secure a contract due to work permit issues. He also trained with Southampton but again, could not sign a professional contract with the club.

In July 2008 he was then offered a two week trial with Premier League side Portsmouth, featuring in some of their pre-season friendlies and impressing enough to be offered a contract. He was eligible for a work permit after recently marrying a British partner. On August 4 , 2008 Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp confirmed that a two-year deal for Koroma had been completed from Hawks FC and confirmed that the striker would be spending the 2008-09 season at Championship side Norwich City.

In September 2008, Koroma was called up to the Gambia Scorpions for the 2010 joint World Cup and African Nations Cup qualifiers against Liberia, making his international debut as a late substitute for Njogu Demba as Gambia ran out 3-0 againts victors.
