Paedophile trial commenced

Africa » Gambia
Friday, October 16, 2009
The criminal case involving the state and one Alasan Bah resumed yesterday before Justice Moses Richards of the Special Criminal Court in Banjul.

The accused is alleged to have had carnal knowledge of  a girl under the age of 18 years on May 18, 2008 in Kololi, KSMD. Testifying before the court, one Corporal Badara Sam recalled that on May 18, 2008 whilst he was on duty at Kotu Police Station,  the mother of the alleged victim (name withheld) came to complain that her daughter has been raped by the accused.

The witness told the court that upon receiving the information, he sent some police personnels  to the scene and the accused was subsequently arrested. The witness said after the arrest, the accused was interrogated and his cautionary statement was recorded, noting that the accused confessed to having committed the alleged crime. During cross examination by defence counsel, L.K. Mboge, the witness said he didn't bother to call an independent witness when he obtained the cautionary statement of the accused because the accused confessed to have committed the alleged crime.

Hearing continues on October 22, 2009.
