Pap Saine trial stalled againThursday, July 02, 2009 The criminal case involving the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and Pap Saine, the co-proprietor and managing editor of The Point newspaper was yesterday, Wednesday July 1, 2009, mentioned before Justice Joseph Wowo of the High Court in Banjul. The Point boss is charged on one count of false publication and broadcasting contrary to Section 181 A (I) of the Criminal Code Cap 10 Vol 3. The particulars disclosed that Pap Saine, on or about 30th January 2009 at Bakau, Newtown in Kanifing Municipality and within the jurisdiction of the High Court being the Director/Editor of Point Newspaper published false news captioned "Arrested Gambian Diplomat in Mile II" on the front page and page 3 of the said newspaper. At yesterday's session, State Counsel MB Abubacarr informed the court that necessary processes have been filed in the case, but The Point editor had not been served. Lawyer Abubacarr however craved the court indulgence to grant the state a short adjournment so as to enable the State to effect service on the accused person. Justice Wowo then urged the State to endeavor to serve Pap Saine before the next adjourned date and warned that the court will not condone unnecessary adjournments. The matter was adjourned to July 6, 2009. It would be recalled that the matter first came up on 11 June 2009 and it was adjourned when the State, represented by DPP Chenge, told the court that he would ensure that the accused was served with notices to appear in court on July 1st, 2009.
