Pirang murder suspect cautioned

Africa » Gambia
Wednesday, October 21, 2009
One Kumba Sowe, was on Monday arraigned before Justice Moses Richards of the special criminal court in Banjul charged for  murder.

The accused was alleged to have killed her 2 year old daughter, Jakariya Sowe by strangling her inside the river on November 2008 at Pirang village in Kombo East District, of Western Region. When the matter was mentioned , Justice Richards asked the accused whether her relatives had been visiting her at the prison custody.

The accused replied in the negative. Then Justice Richards asked her to tell the court what actually happened, then the accused explained that her daughter got drowned.Justice Richards disclosed that it is the obligation of every mother to look after or protect their children but failure to do so would result to a criminal offence. "If you see your child drowning and you cannot risk your life to save her, then there is an ulterior  motive" he added.

Justice Richards said the accused relatives may not be visiting her because they are not happy with her. The matter was adjourned to November 3, 2009 for mention.
