Ports, Wallidan primed for battle

Africa » Gambia
Friday, May 07, 2010
In Gambia First Division League's round 17 this weekend, leaders Gambia Ports Authority and Wallidan will clash in a match that could well decide the destination of the title.

Wallidan currently sit second with 31 points, only 4points shy of Bonu Johnson's Ports Authority and the two sides will meet on Saturday, May 8, at the Serrekunda East mini-stadium with revenge on Blues Boys’ mind, having lost to Ferry Boys 1-0 in the first round meeting.
Anything other than a win would see the Wallidan side lose control of their own destiny, therefore Coach Foday Bah will settle for nothing less than three points.

Ports and Wallidan are so much ahead of the other teams with joint-third placed sides in Gamtel, Samger and Steve Biko all on 24 points, leaving the two sides to edge closer to virtually securing the top two places.

In their last round fixtures, Wallidan won 2-nil against Sea View to maintain their hundred percent start to the second round campaign, while Ports Authority were held to a goalless draw by Samger  - their second set back since the start of the second round. While Wallidan and Ports battle it out at the top, fellow strugglers Sea View and Hawks will also rub shoulders against each other at the Manjai Kunda ground in a clash dubbed 'battle for survival'.

The two sides currently occupy the red zone with Alagie Sarr's Sea View having a one-point upper-hand over Sang Ndong's Hawks, who managed only one win in their last 16 fixtures. Samger will take on ninth-place Interior FC at the Serrekunda West mini-stadium in Saturday's final fixture.

On Sunday, both Steve Biko and Gamtel will be looking to bounce back from their mid-week defeats when they take on their respective opponents. Steve Biko face Armed Forces at the Serrekunda East mini-stadium, while Gamtel will rub shoulders against Bakau United at Manjai Kunda.

Round 17 final clash will see relegation-threatened Brikama United host resuscitated Real de Banjul at the Box Bar mini-stadium with the latter looking for their fourth-straight win.
