President Jammeh trashes opposition in their political backyard

Africa » Gambia
Wednesday, November 30, 2011
The president-elect, His Excellency Sheikh Professor Alhaji Dr Yahya Jammeh has again defeated his  opponents in the 2011 Presidential Election, Ousainou Darboe of the UDP and Hamat Bah of the United Front in their own political strongholds. It is interesting to know that the two opposition candidates, Lawyer Ousainou Darboe and Hamat Bah both hail from the Central River Region (CRR) and despite contesting against President Jammeh since 1996, could not defeat him in their own birthplace.

Unlike his opponents, President Jammeh has always been winning in his  in his birthplace, Foni Kansala Constituency, as well as their [the two opposition candidates] own birthplaces; Sami and Upper Saloum Constituencies respectively.

Sami
In Sami Constituency alone, 8, 626 out of 10, 119 registered voters cast their ballots. This figure represents 85% of the total votes in the constituency. Out of this figure, President Jammeh got 5,099 votes, which represents 59%; Ousainou Darboe got 2, 697 votes, which is 31% and Hamat Bah got 830 votes, which represents 10% of the total votes in Sami. There were 14 invalid votes.

Sami used to be a ‘semi-red’ zone for the APRC. Ousainou Darboe hails from the constituency and his party won the last (January 2007) Parliamentary Election in the area. However, Ousainou Darboe has never won a presidential election in Sami. President Jammeh has always won in the constituency since 1996.

Upper Saloum
In the Upper Saloum Constituency, there were 7, 671 votes cast out of 9, 135 registered voters, representing 84% of the total votes cast. Out of this figure, President Jammeh got 4, 765 votes, which represents 62%; Ousainou Darboe got 98 votes which represents 1% and Hamat Bah got 2, 808 votes, representing 37%. There were no invalid votes.

Foni Kansala
In Foni Kansala, there were 6, 289  ballots cast out of 6, 905. This figure represents 91% of the total votes. Out of this figure, President Jammeh got 6, 194 which represents 98% of the total votes; Ousainou Darboe got 36 votes, which is 1% and Hamat Bah got 59 votes, which is also 1%. There were six invalid votes.
