'President Jammeh's call for African unity is my inspiration'

Africa » Gambia
Thursday, February 25, 2010
The executive producer and chief executive officer of T-Plus Productions, Tom Oviawe has disclosed that the clarion call by the Gambian leader, His Excellency Sheikh Professor Alhaji Dr Yahya AJJ Jammeh was the inspiration behind his company producing the first ever Gambian-Nollywood movie titled My Gambian Holiday.

Oviawe, a Nigerian national based in Ghana, arrived in The Gambia towards the latter part of 2009 to produce a Nollywood film here. The movie has a cast of Nigerian, Gambian and Ghanaian actors in the persons of Desmond Elliot, Modou Musa Ceesay and Awa Gassama.
Speaking to the Daily Observer last Sunday, Oviawe described the Gambian leader in glowing terms. “The Gambian leader is a man not only worthy of emulation by all Africans but someone whose words should be acted upon in order to facilitate the economic emancipation of the African continent. "President Jammeh is a true pan-Africanist and his message must be taken seriously by us, the youths of Africa if our dreams of economic liberation must be achieved this century.

My belief in his pan-African ideals is what the movie "Gambia Holiday" is all about," he enthused, and added: "Africa is indeed blessed with not only natural resources but there abounds a plethora of talents in this great continent and I must say The Gambian leader has been championing this call and am very supportive to the call because that to me is the only way forward. " Asked how he came to know about the president's call for Africans to unite, he revealed that GTRS the national television station played a vital role through its satellite network. "I was opportune to watch GRTS on my satellite TV back home in Nigeria and after hearing the continuous message of President Jammeh to all Africans, visiting the country became a primary task for me and that visit is what led to the production of a movie, one that tried to show that together Africa can surmount any challenge. I feel proud that for the first time, Nigerian, Gambian and Ghanaian actors were brought together to work in harmony for the overall good of all," he said.

Tom then declared: "The Gambian movie industry is now born, the whole world has to now watch out for us as there is no going back." He also called on fellow movie producers to come and invest in The Gambia as according to him "the beautiful landscape and the affectionate smiles of the Smiling Coast are very essential to movie production, The Gambia also is relatively very economical for movie production and the size of the country gives it an added advantage as producers will no longer worry about proximity or distance when shooting their films".
