Regional teams shine in FA Cup preliminaries

The preliminary round of the 2008/09 Gambia Football Association FA Cup Championship ended on Wednesday, June 17, with two out of the three participating regional teams progressing to the next stage of the competition.

Waterman FC of Basse and  Central River Region side, Brikama Ba FC, are among the four teams that booked first round tickets. Waterman beat Serrekunda United in a post-match penalty after a goalless draw at the East Mini-stadium to grab a first round fixture against against Nema United, while Brikama Ba also added to relegated Kaira Silo woes with a 2-1 victory at the Brikama Box Bar mini-stadium.

Brikama Ba's reward for upsetting third division bound Kaira Silo is a first round fixture against Jambanjelly who struggled to beat Upper Badibou in a penalty shoot-out after a goalless draw at the Father Gough Sports Complex in Manjai. Young Africans were also assured of a first round spot after an emphatic 3-1 victory over Lower Niumi. The Banjul club will meet the GFA first division league bound Interior at the first round fixture.

The six qualifying teams from the first round stage, which will be decided on Sunday, June 21, will join the awaiting top ten teams in the first division for the round of 16 fixtures fixed between June 27 and June 28, 2009.
