Activities marking World Press Freedom day are in progress. We join our colleagues in the commemoration of the day with a call for responsible journalism and censorship of hate speeches. This is essential in that as much as we demand our rights, we should also be cognizant of and ready to uphold our responsibilities.

The media has a crucial role in society.Journalists are instrumental in shaping the views of people as well as the sense of direction of the society.Mishandling of the pen or the microphone can only tantamount to self-destruction and, destruction of society as a whole. This is why professionalism is an underlying word in the line of duty of journalism. Responsible reporting should become and always continue to be the watchword of our reporters.

Besides, the role of journalists in the society goes far beyond informing and entertaining. Using the media as centres for trading derogatory remarks, expressing personal grievances, reporting things that are nobody’s business and publishing or broadcasting stories that lack any iota of truth and credibility are not in any way in the interest of responsible journalism.

Responsibility goes with professionalism.A journalist can only be professional inline of duty if he/she utilizes the might of the pen or the microphone in a manner that promotes the advancement and progress of the society. Every journalist must therefore commit him/herself to ensuring that before rushing to the press, his/her story is credible, fit for public consumption and not just published for publishing sake.

It takes a great deal of effort, conscience and conviction for people to deliver responsibly in their work. As journalists we are required to be role models and be the mirror of society. We should therefore be responsible at all times in the execution of our work.
