Revising court strikes out NRP objection

Africa » Gambia
Tuesday, August 16, 2011
The Revising Court in Janjangbureh, Central River Region (CRR) presided over by Magistrate Lamin Mbye Saturday struck out the objection of the opposition National Reconciliation Party (NRP).

When the case was called, the court struck out 88 names out of 162 names filed by Demba H Sey, the NRP agent in Upper Saloum Constituency during the  recently concluded voter registration exercise. Magistrate Lamin Mbye said the court lacks the jurisdiction to entertain citizenship cases and can’t proceed with the case. He added that it is the High Court that has the jurisdiction to hear such cases.

Meanwhile, the remaining 74 names were withdrawn by the plaintiff, Demba H Sey who said he could not defend the case. After the defence counsel, Lawyer Badou SM Conteh’s marathon cross-examination of the first witness, Demba H Sey said he had consulted with his party leader, Hamat NK Bah who authorised him to withdraw the case as they can’t defend it. He was then fined the sum of D500 by the court.

The plaintiff was also advised to maintain the peace.
