Right Choice donates zone lights to Kallang Village

Africa » Gambia
Thursday, February 25, 2010
Right Choice Supermarket, a  renowned business enterprise in the country, on Monday gave  59 zone lights to the entire inhabitants of Kallang Village in the Foni Bondali District.

The donation is aimed at complementing the efforts of His Excellency Sheikh Professor Alhaji Dr Yahya AJJ Jammeh,  who earlier rendered similar assistance to the inhabitants of Bujingha and Jiramba Villages in the Foni Kansala District. The villages of Jakoi, Gebloivick and Battending in the Foni Bintang District, have also enjoyed similar assistance from Com Afrrique and TATA Africa-Safari Motors.

Zone light is a high technology product that can provide light to a household with solar as a source of energy. The product has a life span of 6 years. It is cost-effective andprevents outbreak of fire normally caused by candles. Presenting the zone lights to the community of Kallang, Ram Aswari, the general manager of Right Choice Supermarket, assured the villagers of his support and to the needy Gambians, adding that this is the beginning and shall not be the end. He challenged the villagers to to handle the product with care, and ensure that it serves the purpose. Aswari pointed out that they  have the obligation in return to render assistance to similar communities.

He then presented a certificate of implementation to each household head. The certificate, he added, represents an agreement to create a village zone light fund and will ensure that the initiative becomes self-sustainable. For his part, Ram Mohan, the managing director of Com Afrique, said the initiative commenced in The Gambia with his company offering to sponsor the village of Jaka Gibbirick and that TATA Africa-Safari Motors also responded by giving similar sponsorship to the village of Battending. He therefore urged other companies and organisations to come forward to give similar assistance to communities, especially people from the rural areas who are using candles as a source of light.

Captain Seedy Baldeh of the Gambia Armed Forces, who accompanied the donors to the village, commended them for the assistance. He urged the beneficiaries to make best use of the products. He also stressed the need for other donors to join the ones sponsoring.
Babucarr Kujabi, the Alkalo of Kallang Village also expressed appreciation to the donors and promised to fulfill the agreement of creating a fund for the solar zone light for its maintenance and sustainability.

Famara Dampha, the chairman of Com Afrique Limited, chaired the ceremony. The donors were accompanied by a renowned businessman, Nandu and some of his family members.
