Robbery suspect closes defence

Africa » Gambia
Monday, September 14, 2009
One Modou Camara on Wednesday, September 9, 2009, entered his defence before Justice Moses Richards of the Special Criminal Court in Banjul.

The suspect is alleged to have threatened one Muhammed Singhateh with a cutlass and violently robbed him of the sum of D700 and a Nokia phone valued at D2,000 on December 22, 2009 at Serrekunda in the KSMD. In his defence, Lawyer Edward Gomez asked the accused whether he was aware of the charge against him and the evidence being produced by the state concerning the alleged crime.

The accused replied in the affirmative and also told the court that he remembered making only one statement at the police station. The accused was given two statements purportedly recorded by the police and the accused disclosed that the statement he made at the police station wasn't much.

The accused told the court that he was in police custody for one week before his statement was recorded. During cross-examination, DDPP Mikailu Abdulahi said the issue before the court was the admissibility of the accused person's statement which had prompted the court to go to a voire dire and since the accused had admitted making the statement, he need not question him anymore. The matter was adjourned to September 17, 2009 for the state to file its briefs.
