Monday, July 30, 2012

The 4th Annual Summer Basketball camp organised by Scholar Athlete for Change (SAC) will open today at the Independence Stadium in Bakau. The camp is meant for students between the age of 10-17. The theme of this year's camp is “Hazard of life”

The five-day event will also inlude a two-day skills training mainly focusing on refereeing matches, rules and regulations of the game and more knowledge on basketball for Physical Education (PE) teachers, coaches, and regional sports coordinators.

This year, SAC Gambia will have officials and basketball players from SAC Finland in their midst who have already arrived in The Gambia. Among them are; Pierre Jallow, a Gambian professional basketball player based in Finland; Marrku Sointu, vice president of Finnish YMCA and a board member of SAC Finland; Matti Vainios, president of YMCA Tampera in Finland; Juno Sointu and Otto Vainio, both professional basketball players. Two Finnish schools, Soppeenharjun Koulu, and Saaksjarven Koulu have also donated “Taksvarkki” to the event.

Speaking to Observer Sports at Lebato Hotel in Fajara on Saturday, George Gomez, chairman of SAC Gambia explained that the Finns are in the country to see their programme and how to enhance it. “It is very important, as our mission is to develop sports from the grassroots and to encourage and develop education through sports,” he added.
