Sanna Nyassi shines in US

Wednesday, February 11, 2009
Gambia international teenager Sanna Nyassi has scored two second-half goals as his United States club, Sounder FC, beat Shandong Luneng of the Chinese Super League 2-0 in a pre-season match at Oxnard on Tuesday.

It was Nyassi's third goal in the first two exhibition games. On the Monday, the 19-year-old former GPA forward scored one goal and notched an assist as Sounders beat LA Galaxy 3-1. Nyassi's incredible display in Seattle's Tuesday win made coach Sign Schmid's decision to tie him to a permanent deal a pretty clear.

After a goalless score in the first interval, Nyassi came off the bench to break the deadlock in the 56th minute - chipping the ball over the Shandong keeper after a well pass from his team-mate Stephen King. The second goal came when Sebastien Le Toux launched the ball over the offside trap to the speedy Nyassi, who found himself one-on-one with the keeper. Nyassi drew the keeper out of the box and went around him, leaving nothing between him and the goal but open turf. He dribbled to point-blank range and hammered it in for the 2-0 lead.

Commenting on the striker's performance, coach Schmid said: "He obviously has good speed. If a team is going to play an offside trap, then a player like him or if we had played a player like Steve Zakuani, we're going to tear a team like that apart. So that's what Sanna did. He finishes goals well. The first one he finished very well by chipping it over him. The timing of his run was very good."
