Scorpions tackle French Ligue 2 club

Africa » Gambia
Friday, October 09, 2009
The Gambia Scorpions will engage FC Guingamp, a French Ligue 2 side, in an international friendly match today in France.

Scorpions' Belgian coach, Paul Put, has called up all his big name players for the tie, which will be Scorpions first competitive match since bowing out of the 2010 joint qualifying round in October 2008. The France test came barely a month after Gambia football authorities called off two proposed friendlies arranged by Coach Paul Put with Belgian First Division clubs. Defending their decision to call off the Belgium friendlies, the Gambia Football Association secretary general, Jammeh EK Bojang, said the Belgian tactician was green light to go ahead with the game, but added that the GFA later decided to call it off after suspecting foul play.

The endorsed France friendly, according, secretary general Bojang, is part of the Gambia Football Association's effort to keep the national team active ahead future qualifier matches. En Avant de Guingamp is a French football club founded in 1912 and based in Guingamp that plays in Ligue 2. This professional team is a typical, playing in a commune of about 8,000 inhabitants, with a stadium of more than 18,000 seats.

A number of high profile players have played for Guingamp including Jean-Pierre Papin, Vincent Candela, Florent Malouda and Didier Drogba. Guingamp are the current holders of the Coupe de France, after becoming only the second team to win the competition from outside Ligue 1. They thus qualified to play in the UEFA Europa League 2009-10 in which their first match was in the play-off round against Hamburger SV of Germany. They lost the match 8-2 on aggregate. (1-5 1st leg at home and 1-3 2nd leg away)
