Securities stun Napsa in friendly

Africa » Gambia
Wednesday, August 12, 2009
As part of celebrations marking the 15th anniversary of the July 22nd Revolution, the National Patriotic Student Association (NAPSA), on Monday, locked horns with security chiefs in a friendly football match at the Independent Stadium in Bakau.

The friendly game was graced by, among other dignitaries, the speaker of the National Assembly, Elizabeth Renner, and the minister for Youth and Sports Sheriff Gomez. Prominent security heads including the Chief of Defence Staff, Lieutenant General Langtombong Tamba and minister for Interior Ousman Sonko all played in the game that saw the securities come from behind to snatch the winner.

NAPSA first took the lead through a Saja Sanneh strike, but goals from Major Musa Savage and Superintendent Andrew Gomez won the game for the star-studded security side. Despite being the losers on the pitch, the NAPSA side that also had Seedy Njie as skipper, were never disappointed as they walked away with a cash prize of D25,000 (twenty five thousand dalasis) given to them by the security chiefs.

The minister for Youth and Sports, Mr Gomez, also gave them D2,000 (two thousand dalasis) to show his appreciation of the way the students conducted themselves during the course of the game, which was meant to strengthen the already cordial relations that exist between the student body and the security units.
