Senegal hold Gambia

African U-17 champions The Gambia stormed back to snatch a 1-1 draw against a formidable Senegalese side on Saturday in a friendly international match at the Independence Stadium, Bakau.

The visitors took the lead in the 34th minute through Joseph Lope's strike, but striker Buba Jallow, alias Meles, came off the bench to save the Baby Scorpions from what would have been their first serious defeat since returning from Algeria championship in March. The game began with a high tempo as both teams fought fiercely in the midfield. The champions of the 2009 African U-17 Championships, however, looked the better side from the start, but it was the visitors who later had the say to control the game with a string of swift and accurate interchanges and passing moves. The Gambia nearly opened the scoring on 21st minutes when forward Alasana Camara headed home after a flicker from his teammate Saihou Gassama.

Senegal replied with some few chances from set pieces, with a powerful free-kick by Karim Camara forcing Gambian goalkeeper Musa Camara into a world class save.Moments later, the visitors were ahead. Senegal's tormentor-in-chief, Abdul Karim Camara, controlled the ball from his own half as he pierced through the porous Gambian defense to set up Romaric Lope who skipped past Kemo Ceesay before beating keeper Musa Camara. The Gambian side recovered after the break, carving open their opponents defense several times. Baby Scorpions' new entrance, Buba Jallow, wasted his side's best chance in the 50th minute when he faced Senegal goalkeeper Makhtar Traore on virtually a one-to-one situation.

However, Jallow who is one of the new faces looking for a place in the team ahead of the World Cup finals in Nigeria, made up for his deadly miss when he coiled in a fascinating equalizer after a brilliant combination by Alasana Camara and Lamin Samateh. The Gambians tried hard to add the tally, but they were kept at bay by the determined Senegalese defense.

Finally the even-sided match ended 1-1, a result fair for both teams. "We are satisfied with the result. We played good football and created a lot of good opportunities," revealed the satisfied Senegal coach."My players were very fast with the ball, but the Gambians were more physical and this disturbed us in the final minutes of the game." His Gambian counterpart, Tarik Siagy, could not be reached for comment after the arrogant team kit manager, Adama Loum, asked the security personnel to block the press from getting access to the Egyptian.
