Ovear a hundred members of the State House Mosque Committee and the Zenith Football Club of Yundum New Site, yesterday, gathered at the mosque committee's 7-hectare bean farm located behind the Yundum Army Barracks.

Speaking to the Daily Observer at the farm, Imam Mustapha Jallow, deputy imam at State House, thanked President Jammeh for coming up with the initiative, noting that it will help the country to attain food self-sufficiency.

Imam Jallow told the Daily Observer that part of the proceeds of the farms will be donated to patients at the Royal Victoria Teaching Hospital (RVTH), and to the Jammeh Foundation for Peace Hospital. The rest, according to him, will be used during the committee's annual Gamo, held at State House.

He then recited some verses in the Holy Qur'an, which advise human beings to feed from their sweat. For his part, the Amir of the State House Mosque committee, Alhagie Ba-sainey Camara said that farming is part of "our culture and that everybody should take up the initiative in order for the country to attain food self-sufficiency". According to him, the initiative, from the Islamic point of view, should not just be seen as the president's call, but we have to work hard and eat from our sweat.

Modou Ndour, president of Zenith FC, told the Daily Observer that they were impressed with the committee's move to venture into farming.
