Tuesday, June 19, 2012

The organisers of the Gambia National Wrestling Organising Committee on Thursday visited the Honourable Minister of Youth and Sports, Alieu Kebba Jammeh, at his office at the Quadrangle in Banjul.

The Committee and the minister dialogued on the development and preparation of the upcoming proposed National Wrestling Championship scheduled from 29th June to 1st July 2012.

The minister thanked President Jammeh for being the main supporter in sports. He also thanked the National Wrestling Organising Committee for their hardwork in strengthening their feet on the development of wrestling in the Gambia.

He stressed that this championship is of paramount significance to President Jammeh and that what the nation is about to witness is a combination of the president’s tireless efforts in uplifting the country’s traditional game. He added:This is a game that is ingrained in our culture and tradition which should not be allowed to downfall.”

Minister Jammeh further stated that the president has given support both financially and morally.“The only way we can complement the president’s efforts, is by collating and reviving it from the grassroots, that is one of the ways by which we can give back support to President Jammeh,” he added.

He also urged wrestlers to maintain their traditional way of dressing, while appealing to the private sector to invest in wrestling. He further appealed to the newly elected Wrestling Association executive to measure up to expectations. He also urged the Wrestling Association to abide by the rules and regulations that guide the sports in the country.
