State House mosque committee farm harvested

Africa » Gambia
Friday, September 25, 2009
Over hundred soldiers and civilians  on Thursday descended on the State House mosque committee farm to harvest beans from the farm located behind the Yundum Army Barracks in Yundum.

Army Staff sergeant, Sainey Camara,  said  the move is in response to the president's back-to-the-land call and that it is their duty to lead  by example. According to him they have been growing beans  in their six-hectare farm in recent years as opposed to   years before when they grew only  coos.  Staff Sergeant Camara disclosed that after harvesting the crops they share it  among  different people who  use it for different purposes at different occasions like ''Gamos'. "Some beans are also  donated  to the patients  at the Royal Victoria Teaching Hospital for the fact that  patients need it for protein.

Imams and  soldiers on duty within the barracks  are also beneficiaries," he concluded. For his part, Imam Sainey Kebba Touray of Yundum Barracks,  reiterated  the importance of team work  to enable them heed the president's call for food self-suficiency.  He called on  everybody to  go back to the land so that together  we can be self-sufficent in food production.

Sergeant Sarjo Colley echoed similar remarks saying: "We are also contributing towards the development of the country.  He added that the bean farm in Yundum is not their only farm but that they had  one in Nuimi, which is a coos farm. Other speakers included Alieu Mbaye, member of State House mosque committee, Abdoul Kadir Jammeh, and Salifu Kujabi, members of the State House mosque committee.
