Monday, December 22, 2008
In response to the Operation Clean the Nation call by the Gambian leader, Professor Alhaji Yahya Jammeh, tourist guides at the Sun Beach Hotel in Cape Point, Bakau, yesterday embarked on a massive cleansing exercise on the streets of Bakau.

The exercise led by Basiru Gassama, an ORG Awardee from President Jammeh, showcased cleaning of the main road leading from Newtown to Bakau Lower Basic School and then straight into Bakau Petrol Station. The gutters and walls of the Department of Works and Construction formerly PWD, were all painted and cleaned.

Mr Gassama, coordinator of the exercise who doubled as the chief security  officer at the Sun Beach Hotel and coordinator of Sun Beach tour guides told the Daily Observer at the site that government cannot do all alone, but people have to equally complement government's efforts."Operation Clean the Nation is a brilliant and wonderful initiative made by President Jammeh.

Healthy nation is a healthy people.  We are more than resolved to complement his efforts.  The dump site behind Bakau Lower Basic School has to be taken off so as to ensure that students are healthy" Mr Gassama said. He seized the opportunity to congratulate President Jammeh on the Professorship  award conferred on him. He equally hailed the recent election of Obama and his vision for world free of violence.
