Sundsvall trial out-of-contract Babaye![]() Tuesday, February 16, 2010 Gambian defender Lamin Babaye Conateh has joined Aziz Corr Nyang's GIF Sundsvall on a week-long trial after Assyriska failed to renew his contract at the end of last season. Gambia Sports Online has revealed that the hard tackling former Wallidan centre back has joined his compatriot and former Assyriska teammate to convince the Sundsvall coaching staff to give him a permanent deal. According to the Swedish press, the 28-year old Gambian international is likely to get a deal from Soren Akeby who is keen to find a replacement for the departed Erkan Saglik who left the club for Turkey last week leaving the team with only three centre backs. "It is totally unbiased. He comes up to us and starts training from Monday. I know this player, but I want to see him in training as well. Now it fits in well in that he is also a very good friend with Aziz Corr Nyang" said Sundsvall coach Soren Akeby. The GIF Sundsvall coach draws similarities between Conateh and Liberian international Jimmy Dixon whom Akeby coached at Malmö FF but now with Turkish side Manisapor. He said: "He reminds me a lot about him (Jimmy Dixon) and he's a really tough player. Now we get a chance to form an opinion about him". Lamin Conateh was a teammate of Aziz Corr Nyang in the first half of the season at Assyriska before the latter leave for Sundsvall in the second half and says they know each other very well. "Yes, we have both played together at Assyriska and the Gambia national team. Now my agent has fixed it so that I can train and show Sundsvall what I can do. But I don't know more than that at the moment because it is up to the club to give me a contract or not. It will be exciting to see what happens" Babaye said. Lamin Conateh arrived in Sweden from the Gambia in 2007 and has played two seasons in Superettan. He has made 29 appearances from the start. It now remains to be seen whether he can convince the Sundsvall management of a contract. | Media Actions See Also |
