Taiwanese embassy gives US$6000 TO UTGThursday, December 24, 2009 The embassy of the Republic of China on Taiwan in The Gambia, yesterday presented a cheque amounting to US$ 6000 to the University of The Gambia at a presentation ceremony held at Gambia College campus in Brikama. The money is meant for the needy students in the University of The Gambia who are unable to pay their fees in the University and have the qualifications to study. Presenting the cheque, Richard Shih, the Taiwanese ambassador to The Gambia, said the people of China on Taiwan will always be so happy to standby the Gambia especially the University of the Gambia as it is so far the highest education institution in The Gambia. He then cited the excellent relations between Banjul and Taipei saying “the relationship between the two countries is a strong one and will always continue to be”. This according to him is the main reason they will never hesitate in taking part in any event that will help in the development of The Gambia. Ambassador Shih then reiterated his country’s willingness to do more for The Gambia, noting that such kind of gesture has been a tradition between The Gambia and the Republic of China on Taiwan and will always be a tradition. Speaking at the occasion, the vice chancellor of the University of The Gambia, Professor Muhammadou M.O. Kah, described the gesture as yet another demonstration of the concern that the people of China on Taiwan have for the Gambia. He noted that it has been a tradition that they always stand by The Gambia in various areas of development. “The Republic of China on Taiwan has been a good Samaritan for the Gambian people and they are showing that they will always be there for the Gambian people,” he concluded.
