Teachers IT training wraps upMonday, January 11, 2010 The five-day Information Technology (IT) training for teachers, organised by the Freedom Camp International (FCI) ended at a ceremony held at the Joint officers’ Mess Saturday in Kotu. The training that was jointly funded by the United States Embassy in Banjul and the country’s national GSM operator Gamcel, availed the IT teachers the opportunity to come up with a unique, harmonized curriculum that would be used by various schools so as to reduce the tendency of students having different understanding of IT. Speaking at the closing ceremony, Victor O. Akuegbuonwu, the executive director of Freedom Camp International said the training was fruitful as the IT teachers participated fully and came up with a unique curriculum. He thanked the US Embassy in Banjul and Gamcel for their support in making the training a success, urging the teachers to utilise the knowledge gained during the training and to use the present curriculum in their various schools. For his part, Adama Jimba Jobe, a representative of the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, hailed the FCI for its’ foresight, adding that it is part of complimenting the efforts of the Education Ministry as they cannot do it alone. He observed that the introduction of a unique IT curriculum is a move in the right direction, and urged the FCI to extend their work to schools in the hinterland. He finally thanked the sponsors and assured FCI of his ministry’s continuous collaboration. For his part, Modou Njie, the chief executive officer (CEO) of Nweb Limited, who is also a board member of FCI, said the training is important as far as improving the knowledge of IT teachers is concerned, adding that it would help to bridge the knowledge gap of IT teachers. He thanked the FCI for the initiative and assured them of his support at all times. The representatives of the sponsors, Janko Fofana and Lamin Jammeh of the US Embassy and Gamcel respectively, expressed delight for partnering with FCI, adding that teachers need to be equipped in order to give quality knowledge to the students who are the future leaders of the country.
