The economy on track

Africa » Gambia
Monday, March 08, 2010
Editorial,

The survival of any nation, it is widely argued, depends on its economy because the community of economic life is the major feature within a nation. Hence, the success of the leadership of any sovereign nation to a great extent could be measured by the success of its economic policies. It is therefore no surprise that development-minded people the world over are giving a pass mark to the leadership of this country for its track record building a solid economy and in fulfilling the needs and aspirations of the citizenry.

We are optimistic that all the recommendations from outside acknowledging our development strides serve as a wake up call to Gambians that this country will ever continue to float in the ocean of growth and progress; hence the need to reaffirm commitment and loyalty to the to the leadership.

The most recent of the fair and favourable assessments of President Jammeh's economic performance  are the comments by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) that the country's economy for the past years has been progressively growing, and has the  potentials to grow in the near future.  This did not come as a surprise. Since 1994, it has been development galore all the way!  Apart from economic growth, we have seen infrastructural development in all sectors: roads, pipe borne water, electricity, hospitals, schools etc.

We know that the IMF is a serious organisation; it does not draw partial conclusions on the progress of a country just to please the leadership or any party. The comment on the progress of The Gambia economy was the result of a comprehensive enquiry and scrutiny of the country's economic state of affairs.  The developments that brought this positive news did not come out of the blue; they emerged out of president Jammh's realisation that we have the blessing of the wealth of our vast resources, the power of our talents and the potentials of our people.

This is motivating us to grab the opportunities at our disposal. We commend the leadership of this country that has provided the enabling environment and for engendering such sound fiscal policies and exploring dynamic leadership skills to ensure that the country triumphs in all its engagements.
