Theft at Jarreng

Africa » Gambia
Friday, June 26, 2009
Residents of Jarreng village in the Niamina East District, Central River Region South are currently facing difficulties to acquire drinking water following the recent theft of the solar panels at the village borehole by unknown people.

Residents of the village have expressed anger and disappointment with the behaviour of these unscrupulous people which left them without any water supply. Speaking to our correspondent, Lamin Sanyang, a resident of the village lamented the fact that little protection was given to the borehole as there was no watchman to guard it. According to him, this was why the thieves were able to access the panels and get away with two.
Sanyang however, urged the village development committee to strengthen efforts in sustaining such developments.

Bakary Wally, another resident of Jarreng said the thieves broke into the fence near the borehole at the outskirt of the village during the night and took away the solar panels. According to him, the village with an estimated population of about 700 people are currently battling with water shortage. "There is only one well available in the whole village and its location is far. So we are definitely suffering as a result this unfortunate act.  We are therefore appealing to the authorities to help us restore the situation" he said. Kumba Drammeh, a housewife also explained to our reporter about the suffering they are facing since the solar panels where stolen. She said they now depend on the well at the skills center, to fetch waters.

She equally joined the entire villagers in appealing to the authorities to come to aid. Meanwhile, the solar theft case has been reported to the Jarreng Police who are currently investigating the matter.
