Tobacco Road murder suspect appears before Special Court

Africa » Gambia
Monday, October 19, 2009
One Dodou Secka was arraigned before Justice Moses Richards of the Special Criminal Court in Banjul last Friday, on charges of murder.
The accused was alleged to have murdered one Jaja Cham by stabbing him with a knife, on August 31st, 2009 at Tobacco Road in Banjul. When the matter came up, the presiding judge asked the accused if his relatives had been visiting him since he was incarcerated. The accused told the court that they used to visit him but of late, they have stopped doing so.
Justice Richards disclosed that he has made an order for the state to provide the accused with a lawyer. The judge, however, suggested that the family should try to get the accused a legal counsel so that the matter can commence, noting that legal aid from the state is not automatic. The matter was later adjourned to November 2, 2009.
