Today is Gamo

Friday, February 26, 2010
Muslims in The Gambia will join the rest of the Muslim Ummah today, Friday 26th February, 2010 to observer Mawlud Nabi commonly known as Gamo.

The celebration of the night is in observance of the birthday of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAW) which occurs in Rabi' al-awwal, the third month in the Islamic calendar.

Prophet Muhammad (SAW) was born on the night of 12 Rabi' al-Awwal, the third lunar month (12th day- Monday the 20th day of April, 571 AC) in the city of Mecca. This date is also remembered with sadness, as it is also the day of his demise.

The occasion is celebrated by remembering the favours bestowed on the Muslim Ummah- first is the revelation of the Holy Quran with its instructions and the institution of an Ever-living Guide who would advise the believers to follow the good deeds of Prophet Mohammed (SAW).
